Essar's continued commitment to industry standards, procedures and practices

Access to worldwide industry experience

Recently, Essar UK announced its industrial membership of The Welding Institute (TWI), one of the world's foremost independent research and technology organisations.

Eur Ing Roy Rowlands CEng FWeldI, Essar’s Site Welding Engineer, explains the benefits that the membership brings:

“The TWI membership demonstrates Essar’s continued commitment to industry standards, procedures and practices. It will provide the company with a range of engineering services, with access to leading scientists and engineer specialists who can share their industry best practice and experience with us.

“Not only does this membership provide essential resources and support for Essar, but there is an excellent community within the membership that allows us to contribute and collaborate, sharing our own experience and knowledge to others within the network.

“Training provision is also another great advantage offered through the TWI membership. As a Senior Weld Inspector and Certified European and International Welding Engineer, alongside a number of CSWIP Site Inspectors at Stanlow, we have benefited from the training support from TWI, including the mandatory re-accreditation welding inspection training. The TWI Training programme is not just supported at senior levels, but the institute also runs the Trailblazer Programme, that are government funded apprenticeships covering a range of engineering disciplines.”

A guiding hand now and for the future

The TWI partnership provides Essar with access to engineering consultants who can provide authoritative and impartial expert advice, knowhow and safety assurance related to engineering technologies.

“With essential ongoing work and new projects like HyNet, Fulcrum, CHP and CD4, the industrial membership provides Essar’s onsite engineers with a backstop of engineering, welding, materials and NDT support.

“We have the opportunity to engage TWI and be advised professionally when needed and this continuous learning cycle not only broadens our own workforce’s capabilities and understanding, but it allows us to try, test and submit practices and procedures that TWI can review and accredit as an industry standard.”

A consultation with TWI recently enabled Essar to improve on site performance and save cost as part of verifying NDT results:

“We had some Root Cause Analysis done on site in relation to some existing piping. To confirm the NDT results that were presented to us, we engaged with TWI’s independent consultants. In doing so, we had the additional confidence that we could keep the plant running safely and efficiently.

The TWI membership allows Essar to be part of an international network of expert suppliers and users of welding, joining and allied technologies and products, ensuring the company operates to the highest industry standards and continuously develops our skills and knowledge for years to come.
