Caring about our Communities

Through its range of Corporate Social Responsibility activities, Essar Oil UK aims to be a catalyst of positive change in society. We work with and support our local communities through educational, environmental, wellbeing, sporting and corporate initiatives in partnership working with appropriate agencies and charities.

We have strong relationships with diverse organisations including Age UK Cheshire, Cheshire West and Chester Council, Action Transport Theatre, Cheshire Wildlife Trust, British Heart Foundation, Claire House Children’s Hospice and Cheshire Community Action.

In addition to our central corporate programmes, safety milestones at Stanlow refinery are linked with charitable giving through the ‘Let’s Give’ initiative which makes donations of £3,000 to local charities that have been nominated by the workforce. We also encourage charitable fund raising by our staff and offer match funding for activities involving larger groups of employees across the business.

Education

Essar supports the Hoops 4 Health programme, with basketball training, healthy eating and smoking cessation messages delivered to schools in the Ellesmere Port area through the professional Cheshire Phoenix basketball club.

We are principal sponsors of the SET for Britain Engineering Awards showcase at UK House of Commons, which seek to encourage, support and promote Britain’s early-stage and early-career researchers. 

Grants are offered through the Essar funded Fred Venables Educational Trust to local students from disadvantaged backgrounds starting on a course of higher education at a university or college.

Through partnership working with the local TTE Training facility we help to train the young engineers, technicians and operators of the future. The TTE programme currently recruits around 50 apprentices a year, with up to 20 being sponsored by the company.

We support the Action Transport Theatre Creative Kids programme, which focusses on local primary and SEN schools; Continuing Professional Development provision to support teachers in developing their skills and embed drama & creativity within their classrooms; 8-11s Drama Group – providing regular, free introductory drama sessions to some of the most deprived young people in the local area.

Environment

We are working with the Cheshire Wildlife Trust to develop a range of activities for local schoolchildren to make use of Essar owned Gowy Meadows adjacent to the Stanlow refinery and a local property and woodland area to deliver 'Forest schools' sessions.

The Essar funded Cheshire Community Action Community Pride Competition is run county-wide, recognising the voluntary work undertaken to keep Cheshire a vibrant and attractive place to live.  It encourages people in both rural and urban settings to work together to improve their local environment.

Corporate Citizenship

We will continue to work with the Parish Councils representing our other immediate fenceline communities, to support where we can initiatives that benefit the wider community.

Essar support the successful community and business event, Ellesmere Port 2015 Carnival, featuring 30 giants in town centre parade.

We have helped support the work of the Endeavour Social Hub in Ellesmere Port.  The CIC encourages the older generation to mix with others who are like minded, preventing social isolation as well as promoting health and wellbeing.

ENTEP Properties is a joint venture set up with Cheshire West and Chester Council to provide affordable industrial units for small businesses operating in the Ellesmere Port area.  We will continue to work with CWAC to encourage the growth and development of these enterprises through this initiative. 

ENTEP also supports the position of a full time Youth Worker within the Youth Federation’s ‘NGage’ mentoring and confidence building scheme.  The project offers individual support for young people in deprived areas to give them opportunities to build positive futures.

The Company works closely with TTE Training Limited (TTE) with 2 ESSAR positions on the TTE Board of Directors. TTE exists to service the training requirements of the petroleum and chemical sectors and associated industries within the North West of England. TTE has provided the Company with more than 200 employees who have undergone bespoke industry training .Working together Essar and TTE ensure that the we have the right people, with the right training for skilled jobs.

Age UK’s Wearpurple arts imitative gives people over the age of 50 the opportunity to work with professional artists to learn new skills and gain confidence in their creative abilities. The project, which also involves young Healthcare students from the local college, aims to improve people’s wellbeing and self-esteem, providing a safe and relaxed environment in which to engage in creative activities whilst encouraging people to socialize and make new friends.  Essar will fund the programme in local residential and day-care homes.

Employee support

Safety milestones at Stanlow Refinery are linked with charitable giving through the ‘Let’s Give’ programme which makes donations of £3,000 to local charities that have been nominated by the workforce. We are committed to making six of these awards per year to deserving causes.

The most recent Let’s Give donation was to West Cheshire Foodbank, with the subsequent introduction of two branded collection points within Stanlow for employees to make donations to the charity on an ongoing basis.

For the last few years, Essar Oil UK has celebrated the company's anniversary during the month of August, with a donation to a selected local charity. On the occasion of our fourth anniversary in 2015, West Cheshire Foodbank were the recipients of a cheque for £7,500, together with over 900 kilos of food kindly donated by staff at Stanlow. Our third anniversary in 2014 was marked with a donation of £7,000 to The Pay for a Day initiative at Claire House Children's Hospice.

We encourage charitable fund raising by our staff and will again offer company match funding for activities involving larger groups of employees across the business.

Sport

Health and wellbeing are key messages across all parts of society.  On a local level, we will provide support to active sports clubs, sponsoring both the renowned Four Villages Half Marathon and the West Cheshire Athletic Club for events such as the Chester Round the Walls Race.
