17 October 2023

Earlier this month, we let you know that there would be increased maintenance activity at our site during September and October.

We are now in the closing stages of this work and you may notice an increase in flaring this week (week commencing 16 October) and next week (week commencing 23 October) and a change in noise.

The flaring occurs as part of the process to bring the units brought back on-line.  Flaring is the controlled burning of refinery gases (at the flare structure) from plant safety and vent systems.  The gases are mixed with steam and the steam is added to improve combustion and reduce smoke generation.  Flaring can also be noisy, and we will endeavour to minimise it at all times.

Whilst we have been undertaking the work, the noise from the refinery has been from construction related activities.  In comparison, you may experience an increase in noise over the next couple of weeks associated with the running of equipment like pumps and compressors.

We do hope you have not been too disrupted by the increase in construction activity and its associated noise over the last weeks. We apologise for any disruption or inconvenience this has caused. Please be assured that this activity is undertaken in a safe and controlled way.

We also expect the impact of additional contractors accessing the site to lessen over the next two weeks.

We have staff on hand to deal with any enquires or issues you may have.  You can contact our Security Control Centre on a 24-hour basis by ringing 0151 350 4545.  The Security Control Team will then refer the call to the colleague best qualified to respond to you.  Or you can email us at [email protected].

We would like to thank you for your patience during this period.

We apologise if you heard steam venting on our site recently.  We believe that it was audible in Elton.

This issue has now been resolved.

Thank you for your understanding as we conduct essential maintenance on site.

Please let us know if there are any further issues.
